TikTok user @curedeggyyolk conducted an experiment in a viral video with over 26 million views, demonstrating that humans can hear the difference between the sound of hot and cold water being poured.
In the footage, with two glasses of water, one just boiled and the other containing ice-cold water with ice, he challenges viewers to close their eyes to test if they can hear the difference between the sounds of the water and then watch the video again to check if they guessed correctly.
One user said, “The hot sounds weak, and the cold sounds tinkling, if that makes sense.” Another person made the following analogy: “This might sound strange, but the hot water sounds gentle, and the cold water sounds harsh.” The reason why humans can make this distinction lies in the frequency of the sound.
According to Small Screen Science, air resonance, the vibration of the container, and the water as a whole are sound sources, and although they have the same frequencies, both have different intensities.
The vibration of the container and water is the dominant sound during the pouring of cold water, while when pouring hot water, it is air resonance.
